Cambridge English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Examinations

Every year more than half a million people take Cambridge examinations in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). They take them in order to improve their employment prospects, to seek further education, to prepare themselves to travel or live abroad, or because they want an internationally recognised certificate showing the level they have attained in the language.

The Cambridge EFL examinations are known all over the world and are recognised by universities, employers and national education authorities in many countries. They are run by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) - one of the world's largest and best known educational assessment agencies. The examinations are linked to an international system of levels for assessing European languages.

Cambridge EFL examinations can be taken by anyone whose first language is not English. They are suitable for learners of all nationalities, whatever their first language and cultural background, and there are examinations suitable for learners of almost any age. The range of Cambridge EFL examinations includes specialist examinations in Business English and English for Academic Purposes, as well as tests for young learners and a suite of certificates and diplomas for language teachers.

ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe)

ALTE is an association of institutions within Europe, each of which produces examinations and certification for language learners. Each member provides examinations of the language which is spoken as a mother tongue in their own country or region.

The concept of ALTE was initially formed by the Universities of Cambridge and Salamanca late in 1989, and at the first meeting of the association in 1990 there were eight founder members. Since then membership has grown so that there are now 27 members, representing 24 European languages.
