Candidate Well, I’ve hurt foot.
Examiner Let me see. Where exactly does it hurt?
Candidate Right here at the top of toe.
Examiner Can you stand and put weight on it?
Candidate Not very well. It’s quite painful.
Examiner How did this happen?
Candidate I was helping to carry heavy boxes to the garage and I dropped one on foot.
Examiner Oh dear. Well, it’s very swollen and bruised. I think I’m going to send you for an X-ray, just to check that nothing is fractured.
Candidate What do you mean by fractured?
Examiner Broken. There are many small bones in the foot. They can be quite easy to break.
Candidate Oh, I see.
Examiner It’s important to keep your weight off the foot in the meantime. Keep your foot up, preferably higher than your body.
Candidate What about a bandage?
Examiner Tight bandages are a good idea. The nurse will show you what to do. Also, put ice on it at regular intervals.
Candidate I’m afraid I didn’t quite catch all of that.
Examiner You need to put ice, something cold, over the bruising on your foot. It will help the swelling to go down.
Candidate Oh, I see.
Examiner I’ll just request an appointment for an X-ray. The nurse will take you.
Candidate Thank you.
Examiner And if the X-ray is fine, you need to come back in a week’s time. Meanwhile, I’ll give you a prescription for some anti-inflammatories.
Candidate And how often do I take them?
Examiner Once every four hours for the next three days.
